Stretch and Warm Up

Before you can start any outdoor activity, whether it is a hike or just gardening, warm up to make sure that the joints and muscles are warmed up. Start by stretching the muscles in your legs, shoulders, back and arms. After your gardening session, do some light stretches. Stretching lightly after gardening reduces the risk of getting muscle cramps.

Check Your Form

Maintaining proper form during your yard work ensures that you do not get injured as you are gardening. When you are planting or weeding so not bend at the waist. Instead, you should bend at the knees and keep your spine straight. Ensure that you are not in a twisted position.

Get a Wheelbarrow

When gardening, most people make use of a wheelbarrow. A wheelbarrow allows the gardener to move items from one location in the yard to another. The constant bending and picking up of heavy items can lead to stress on the body and lead to injury.

Choose Appropriately Sized Tools

Different gardening tools come in different sizes. Tools such as rakes and shovels should have handles the right size for the person handling them. If you are too tall and have tools with short handles, you might struggle with back problems if you have to continuously hunch over to use the tools. Use tools the appropriate size for you to avoid excessive bending.
