Proper Workplace Ergonomics

Setting up your workspace properly can help eliminate discomfort and prevent injuries and sore muscles. Also referred to as ergonomics, proper workspace design increases productivity and helps employees focus on the task at hand. If you live in Solon and need more information on workplace ergonomics, contact Reed Chiropractic to discuss your work injury or injury prevention with a licensed chiropractor.

What are Ergonomics?

Ergonomics is the study of people in their working environment. An ergonomic workspace is modified to fit the worker, to reduce the risk of injury and to eliminate discomfort. There are three main ergonomic stressors in any workplace.

  • The force required to complete a task

  • The repetitiveness of a task

  • Working postures when completing a task

Understanding an Ergonomic Work Injury

An ergonomic work injury occurs over gradually over a period. They occur due to awkward postures for extended periods and the forces that act against a body while you sit and work.

Setting Up Your Workstation

The best way to prevent ergonomic issues in the workplace is to set up your area to achieve the least amount of discomfort. Your chair should have a backrest that tilts and lumbar support to encourage excellent posture. Adjustable desks that let you sit or stand throughout the day to reduce fatigue are also excellent ways to address ergonomic issues. Your keyboard should lie flat and offer slope adjustability, and your mouse should have a long enough cord to encourage movement and for proper placement. Adjust your monitor so it is at eye-level, and the screen should be free from flicker. A footrest can also prevent leg and knee fatigue, and those that tilt and swivel help you keep your legs moving throughout the day.
